Nova Labs Internship Program

(POC for this page is Jennyfer Peterson)

The two goals of the program (in order of importance):

  • Incubate and foster maker skills in young or new makers
  • Provide Nova Labs with needed hospitality and service staff to perform front desk and service tasks (e.g., tours, woodshop roundup, surveys, assist with classes, assist in setup and cleanup for events, maintenance and organizing of rooms and work areas etc.)

Requirements:

  • To be successful, Interns must complete the challenge of learning 2 maker skills and completing one Makerquest. The MakerQuest must be documented and repeatable by other makers.
  • Interns work with mentors based on their areas of stated interests.
  • Interns are required to sign up for a minimum of 6 hours per week at the front desk and performing service and hospitality tasks.
  • Interns and/or their parents must be able/willing to respond promptly to email messages from the program coordinator.

Age and Maturity Requirements:

  • (Rising) High-school Freshman to adult are welcome.
  • This is a good fit for motivated and passionate high school and college students.
  • Spaces for students under 16 are limited. These students require more supervision.

Benefits

  • Ages 16 and above are awarded an Associate membership for the duration of the internship.
  • Free access to tool safety classes and some other classes are available.
  • One-on-one mentorship is available for help with skills and Maker Quests.
  • Get to know and potentially collaborate with the incubators and special interests groups
  • Training in industrial arts and with industrial tools.
  • Internship may be short-term for summer or year round.

Notes:

  • Family members of NL members have priority.
  • Family members of people who are actively involved in the lab through volunteer work and participation will also be given priority.
  • Intern must attend "GO!"
  • Interns under the age of 18, the supervising parent must also attend "GO!" by the first day of starting the Internship.
  • For interns under 18, a supervising parent must be present at Nova-labs during the hours of internship.( There may be exceptions to this at the discretion of the supervising mentor.)

Parents of interns under 16 must remain in communication with the supervising mentor. There are a few cases where they may need to remain in the lab if the supervising mentor is not available. This should not be very often, but ask for more details about when this would be the case during the interview. All interns under 18 must have a signed waiver from supervising Parent. All interns under 18 need to have a form which carries Emergency contact, and Medical Information.[ click here for Emergency/Medical Form.]

How to Apply:

The recommended approach is to come in to Nova Labs during our evening hours and ask for the Internship Coordinator. If you find this inconvenient, then you should consider that this is not a good fit since you may be “too busy” to hang out with makers. Making takes time.

An interview is conducted, but do not worry, we are not seeking perfect interns. We are all geeks here anyway. We love geeks and they love us. We love passionate teens and people who want to learn maker skills.
